Sustainable Food Packaging in Bengaluru
By Shalini G.N & Abhipsa Sadangi
This was a 5 week project were we studies and researched about the usage of plastic food packages in Bengaluru and in turn how could we promote the use of alternative food packaging methods. This was in effort of making Bengaluru plastic free and waste free city.
Structure of the Project
We followed the NN group’s Design Thinking Structure and process for this project
UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEXT
Problem statement
“Increase in the usage and wastage of plastic food packages after the rise of food delivery startups in India.”
Food delivery mobile applications and websites have been one of the major causes in the rise of plastic food packaging, specially in the first tier and second tier cities in India. Since we are based out of Bengaluru, we decided to study the scenario in this city, Bengaluru.
SECONDARY RESEARCH
On March 2016, the Karnataka government had prohibited the manufacture and also the sale of thermocol and micro-beads. However, the ban has been circumvented as plastic is well factory-made and accessible within the market. The Karnataka government had written a notification to ban single-use plastics within the state in October 2015 and also the cabinet approved the notification in March 2016 and the ban came into result shortly once.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is currently taking initiatives to enforce the ban in a very stricter manner. It’s currently fastened penalties on all those found producing, supplying, storing, transporting, selling, distributing plastic.
According to the civic authority, plastics are accountable in contributing 20% of the 4,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste generated monthly in Bengaluru. (Figures according to July, 2019). The items lined within the plastic ban are plastic covers, cups, spoons, plates, flags, banners, buntings, flex, cling films, things manufactured from thermocol (polystyrene).
PRIMARY RESEARCH
We went on to do our primary research of the eateries housed on MG road, Bengaluru. This was done to understand and gather few information about their sales, tie — ups with online food deliveries, packaging materials etc.
BUILDING OF ACTIONABLE INSIGHTS
After the research, we started building on insights that could be derived from both primary and secondary research data.
After the completion of insight map we started segregating the data through the pattern of PACT Framework i.e. People, Activity, Context, Technology to make sense of the gathered data and insights.
EXPLORATION
Ideation
We went onto making maps to understand what could be done best for the given time frame and which according to us would have the highest impact at this moment of time.
After the brainstorming and formation of initial ideas we went on to create the benefit map to analyse and understand as to which idea suits best for our project.
After creating the Benefit Map we decided to go along with the solution of having an Awareness Campaign for this project.
FINAL CONCEPT DESIGN
Our idea was revolving around the solution of having an “Awareness Campaign”. We went on to create more maps to understand how to implement this idea and how it would impact the society.
Future wheel mapping describes about the impact this idea would have in the society.
Activity mapping was done to define our strategic goals and tactical activities that would be conducted in order to accomplish the set goals.
Through this activity mapping, we realised that e would stick to creating pamphlets for creating the awareness about the issue in the city (Bengaluru)
We went with Communication Design of the pamphlets and elaborating the design for this service.
JOURNEY MAPPING OF THE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN — PAMPHLETS
This journey mapping was done to understand the different stages that would go into the implementation of pamphlets by incorporating communication design and how it would reach the users.

Contextual Information of our solution
Service Roadmap of the Solution
After much deliberation and going back and forth with the insights we decided to create an online campaign, which would be on Facebook, as an ad campaign where we would post online pamphlets.

Awareness on LinkedIn
We made and shared an article on LinkedIn hoping to reach more and diverse people on this platform, and the following link is an effort to that.

End Note
We being two individuals and students, tried to understand the problem and come up the best solution to tackle the problem in the given time frame, tried our best. We hope to enthusiastically promote and continue the awareness campaign as long as we can.
I hope you liked our work and enjoyed reading through our entire design journey. Your feedback and comments are vital for us and our growth, so do share your thoughts with us.
